She still needs a good ironing BUT I have finally finished sewing my “Dignity Statue” Foundation Paper Pieced Modern Art Quilt TOP based on artist laureate Dale Claude Lamphere’s 50ft sculpture honoring the culture and marginalized Lakota and Dakota peoples of the Sioux Nations who are indigenous to South Dakota called “Dignity of Earth and Sky”, of a Native woman receiving a Star Quilt.
I am moved by the moment he captured—that moment right before she will wrap herself completely within the Star quilt that will grant her warmth, comfort and a sense of protection.
It took me about 2 months to draft and 3 months to sew together.
This Quilt is completely sewn together with small bits of fabric.
Next I have to tackle the back and then quilt it together.
MORE IMPORTANTLY… Our indigenous brothers and sisters in South Dakota are really hurting now, especially children and women escaping domestic violence.
The Lakota Friends Circle works with organizations on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Yankton Sioux Reservations in South Dakota supplying urgent needs. The Friends Circle specifically focuses on educational organizations, two women’s domestic violence shelters, and at risk children. LFC is requesting donations of quilts in various sizes, but there is an ongoing need for monetary donations, school supplies, food, baby supplies, etc.
