A Collection of Quilts that Explore the World Through Fabric, Foundation Paper Piecing & Appliqué
Pieced & Placed: A Passport to Joy is an ongoing collection of landscape quilts inspired by places around the world and the remarkable people who bring those places to life. Each quilt serves as a stitched passport stamp, capturing the architecture, culture, colors, and spirit of a destination through fabric, Foundation Paper Piecing, and Appliqué.
Born from the workshops I teach across the World, this series celebrates more than the landscapes themselves. It honors the universal love of Sewing and Quilting. From bustling cities to quiet villages, from historic landmarks to hidden corners known only to locals, each design is inspired by the places I visit and the quilters I meet along the way. Though we may come from different countries, speak different languages, and call different places home, we gather around sewing machines and cutting tables united by a shared love of making.
The dual techniques of Foundation Paper Piecing and Appliqué mirror this idea of connection. Foundation Paper Piecing provides structure, precision, and architectural form, allowing iconic landmarks and landscapes to emerge through carefully placed geometric shapes. Appliqué introduces softness, dimension, and movement, layering the work with details that evoke gardens, foliage, folk art, water, clouds, and the subtle beauty found within a place. Together, these techniques create quilts that are both graphic and expressive, structured yet deeply personal.
Each piece in the collection is a love letter to a destination and a tribute to the quilting communities that welcomed me there. They are reminders that while geography may separate us, creativity has the power to bring us together. Through fabric, thread, and stitch, Pieced & Placed explores not only the world around us, but also the friendships, stories, and shared moments of joy discovered along the journey.
The journey has only just begun. The collection currently features Paris, Je T’Aime and Nordic Whimsy, with future quilts inspired by the storybook villages of Germany, the lush landscapes of Ireland, the rugged beauty of Scotland, and many more destinations waiting to be explored. With each new design, the passport grows, adding another stitched chapter to a world connected through creativity, curiosity, and the shared joy of quilting.
Every quilt begins with a place. Every place becomes a memory. And every memory is pieced and placed, one stitch at a time.
